Iltchenko bewijst zich met dit album als een zeer temperamentvolle pianiste met oog voor detail.’

Babadjanian’s music was, until recently, was rarely played outside the former Soviet Union. Besides numerous piano pieces, his body of work includes a Piano Trio, performed for the first time in 1953 by Oistrakh (violin), Knushevitsky (cello) and Babadjanian himself (piano) and a Cello Concerto, written for Rostropovich. His Six Pictures nicely fit in with Mussorgky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, an absolute piano masterpiece. Piano Sonata No. 5 from Ustvolskaya makes one understand why Shostakovich was one of her great admirers.
